Shou Sugi Ban

SUMMER 2025

SHOU SUGI BAN

Collection: OPUS | FORÊT – Finish: OPUS BLACK | FORÊT BLACK

ANCIENT FIRE, MODERN CRAFT

At OscarOno Paris, we’re drawn to materials that tell a story. Stories that reveal their beauty not despite their transformation, but because of it. Enter Shou Sugi Ban: the centuries-old Japanese technique of preserving wood by charring its surface. Both bold and understated, this method has become a defining element in some of our most iconic finishes.

A TRADITION FORGED IN FLAME

Originating in 18th-century Japan, Shou Sugi Ban, also known as yakisugi, was born of necessity: burning cedar planks made them more durable, insect-resistant, and fire-retardant. But beyond function, the technique uncovered a poetic depth in wood grain, turning humble planks into richly textured surfaces full of character and contrast.

SHOU SUGI BAN AT OSCARONO PARIS

OscarOno Paris brings this ancient wisdom into modern design with finishes that highlight both material integrity and visual impact. Rather than using it as trend or ornament, Shou Sugi Ban becomes a foundation for architectural storytelling. The blackened hardware has a very unique presence as flames draw original patterns on the wood.

From the refined Rocher Charbon oak surface as seen in Galerie LSD, a private residence on Fisher Island and Braise, a Parisian gastronomic restaurant, to our OPUS Black finish, used in prestigious spaces such as the Hotel Dame des Arts, Maison & Objet 2023, and private apartments in Paris. Each treatment balances artistry with endurance.

Then there’s Forêt Black, OscarOno’s interpretation of Shou Sugi Ban on European oak, used in bold architectural contexts like la Tour Initiale in Paris, Cerede Paris, Imanoglou Jewellery in Athens, and even featured at Salone del Mobile in Milan. Each variation plays with grain, light, and tactility, bringing depth and identity to both walls and floors.

At OscarOno Paris, Shou Sugi Ban isn’t just aesthetic, it’s a philosophy. It respects the rawness of the material, celebrates craftsmanship, and embraces the Japanese principle of wabi-sabi: beauty in imperfection and impermanence.

RAPHAËL NAVOT

Paris, FRANCE – Collection: Opus | Forêt

A DESIGNER OF QUIET MASTERY

Raphaël Navot is not a designer of loud gestures, he stands apart as a quiet force, layered of emotional spaces that linger in the memory. Based in Paris and trained at the Design Academy Eindhoven, his work is defined by sensory depth, material honesty, and what he calls “barefoot luxury”, a grounded, tactile form of elegance.

Navot’s design language resonates deeply with OscarOno Paris. Our collaboration began in 2016 with AD Intérieurs and has since grown into a creative partnership rooted in a shared respect for craft and atmosphere. For both the Forêt and Opus collections, Navot reimagined wood flooring using end-grain blocks arranged with invisible repetition, creating surfaces that dissolve into architecture like whispered textures.

This partnership reached full expression in Hôtel Dame des Arts, where OscarOno’s Opus black finish grounds the lobby and restaurant in a mood that’s both elemental and refined. Other highlights include a joint contribution to Maison&Objet in 2023 and high-end residential spaces where material becomes memory.

Navot’s portfolio spans cultural icons like David Lynch’s Club Silencio, Hôtel National des Arts et Métiers, and the poetic Hôtel Belle Plage in Cannes. Named Designer of the Year by Maison&Objet in 2023, he continues to shape interiors where emotion leads and craft follows.

Together with OscarOno Paris, he transforms wood into more than surface, it becomes a story, a sensation, and a signature of quiet mastery.

SHAPED BY HAND, GUIDED BY VISION

INSIDE OUR ATELIER: THE ART OF MAKING

As we prepare for the September reveal, we invite you to step closer into the world behind the work. At OscarOno Paris, craftsmanship is not a step in the process, it ìs the process. Each piece in our new collection begins with a single wooden form, then evolves through the precision of human touch. Planed, joined, sanded, and finished. Always by hand, always with intention.

The result? A collection that celebrates the quiet beauty of mastery and the integrity of materials.

CRAFTED TO ENDURE. DESIGNED TO INSPIRE.

Our upcoming collection introduces a single, modular component that opens up a world of design possibilities. With multiple configurations and finish combinations, it invites architects to move seamlessly between understated simplicity and bold geometry. A versatile system designed to evolve with the imagination.

Launching this September.
